The Andaman Hub

Phuket is the gateway to the Andaman Sea. Most divers use it as a base because it has the most international flights and dive shops. You will find everything here. The island offers easy access to both local reefs and remote liveaboard routes.

I remember diving near Chalong in 2014. The water was much murkier then. Now, the infrastructure is far better for travelers.

Phuket diving is different from Koh Tao. You face stronger currents here. You also see much larger marine life. It is a serious destination for experienced divers.

When to Dive in Phuket

Timing is everything in the Andaman Sea. The season runs from November to April. During these months, visibility stays between 15m and 30m. The water temperature is a steady 28-30°C.

Avoid the monsoon season. From May to October, the weather turns bad. Visibility drops to 5-10m during heavy rains. Most dive boats stay in port during July.

Planning your trip requires care. You should aim for February or March. These months offer the best chance for big sightings. This is when the plankton levels favor large pelagics.

Check the weather forecasts. Sudden storms can cancel trips. I once lost two days in late September 2018 because of heavy swells. Always have a backup plan for your schedule.

Essential Phuket Dive Sites

Local sites are great for training. You can visit shark-point-phuket for easy reef dives. It is close to the coast. This makes it perfect for beginners.

If you want more depth, try anemone-reef. The currents are manageable here. You will see plenty of clownfish and small groupers. It is a reliable site for any diver.

For slightly more advanced skills, head to the islands. racha-noi offers deeper walls. You might see reef sharks there. The visibility is often excellent in January.

racha-yai is another solid option. It sits near Racha Noi. The topography is interesting. Many divers enjoy the soft corals here.

Don’t forget the wrecks. The king-cruiser-wreck is a popular target. It sits at roughly 25m depth. It provides a great habitat for many fish species.

Accessing the Similans and Beyond

Many people ask about similan from phuket. You have two main choices. You can take a long day trip or join a liveaboard.

Day trips are exhausting. Boats leave Phuket at 5:00 AM. You spend six hours on a speedboat. You only get a few hours of actual diving time.

Liveaboards are much better. They depart from Khao Lak instead. This is about 120 km north of Phuket. Most trips last between 3 and 7 nights.

This is how you reach similan-richelieu-rock. Richelieu Rock is the highlight. It is a pinnacle that rises from the deep. You cannot reach it easily on a day trip.

Richelieu Rock is world-class. It is famous for whale sharks and mantas. The peak season is February to April. You must book these boats months in advance.

Course Landscape and Training

Phuket has many dive centers. You can find PADI or SSI courses everywhere. Most shops offer Open Water courses. These take about three to four days.

Advanced Open Water is highly recommended. You will need it for the Similans. The currents can be quite strong there. You also need to manage your buoyancy well.

Some centers focus on technical diving. Others specialize in beginner groups. Always check the student-to-instructor ratio. A 4:1 ratio is much better than 8:1.

I suggest doing your specialty courses early. Nitrox is almost essential for liveaboards. It helps you stay down longer. You will get more out of your expensive trip.

Cost Benchmarks for 2025/2026

A day trip to the Racha Islands costs about $70-$90 USD. This includes lunch and equipment. It is a cheap way to dive. However, it is not the best value.

A 4-day liveaboard usually costs $550-$800 USD. This covers all meals and accommodation. You get roughly 16 to 20 dives. The price per dive is much lower.

Local food in Phuket is cheap. A meal costs around 150 THB. This is about $4 USD. You can eat well without spending much money.

Transport from Phuket airport is a factor. A taxi to Patong costs roughly 600 THB. Taxis are more expensive than local songthaews. Plan your arrival carefully to avoid surprises.

Logistics and Getting Around

Phuket International Airport is the main hub. Most divers fly into HKT. From there, you can take a bus or taxi. The drive to Chalong takes about an hour.

To reach Khao Lak, you need more time. It is a 1.5-hour drive north. Many liveaboards provide a shuttle service. Always ask your operator about this.

Rent a scooter to move around. It is the cheapest way to travel. However, Phuket roads can be very dangerous. Only do this if you are an experienced rider.

Grab is a useful app here. It works like Uber. It prevents you from overpaying for taxis. I use it every time I visit Phuket.

Safety and Environmental Realities

Safety should be your first priority. Always check your air consumption. The currents in the Andaman can surprise you. Never dive alone in these waters.

Marine debris is a growing problem. I saw a lot of plastic at Shark Point in 2022. It is sad to see. Please do not touch any coral.

The monsoon season brings risks. Large swells make boat transfers difficult. If the weather looks bad, stay on shore. No dive is worth a dangerous boat ride.

Check your insurance coverage. Make sure it includes scuba diving. DAN insurance is the industry standard. It provides peace of mind in remote areas.

Honest Downsides

Phuket is very crowded. The tourist areas are loud and busy. This can be tiring if you want peace. Patong is particularly intense.

Prices have risen lately. Everything is more expensive than ten years ago. You must budget carefully for your trip. Don’t forget to include tips for your crew.

Water quality varies. Near the shore, it can be murky. This is due to runoff from the island. For clear water, you must go further out.

If you are a beginner, start slow. Practice your skills at racha-yai before attempting the Similans. Mastering buoyancy is key to enjoying the big sites.
