The Pinnacle Structure

Anemone Reef sits 1km from Shark Point. It is a submerged pinnacle. The structure rises from the seabed to depths of 8 m. You will find massive coverage here.

I remember diving this site in February 2017. The anemones covered over 90% of the rock surface. This creates a very specific look for the reef. Most divers enjoy the way the currents move through the gaps.

What you’ll see

Expect to see large schools of fish. Barracuda often patrol the edges of the pinnacle. You might also spot a reef-shark near the deeper sections.

The anemones are the main feature. They cover almost every inch of the hard coral. This happens because the nutrient-rich currents feed them constantly.

Many boats combine this with the King Cruiser wreck. The wreck sits 100m away from the reef. You can easily swim between the two sites. It is a productive way to spend a dive day.

Conditions and skill

This is an advanced site. You need good buoyancy control. The depth reaches 28 m on the outer edges.

Moderate currents are common here. You should carry a reef hook in your kit. A surface marker buoy (SMB) is mandatory for safety.

I saw a diver struggle with trim in 2019. They hit the anemones because they could not fight the surge. Always maintain a safe distance from the living organisms.

Logistics from Phuket

Most dive boats depart from Chalong Pier. The boat trip takes about 45 to 60 minutes. Prices for a two-tank boat trip usually cost around 2,500 THB per person.

You can find many operators in Rawai or Chalong. Check the boat size before you pay. Larger boats handle the Phuket swell better than small speedboats.

Most trips include lunch and gear rental. This is a standard practice for local agencies. You should plan your trip via /destinations/phuket/ to see more options.

When to go

The best months are November through April. Visibility stays between 10 m and 30 m during this window.

Avoid the monsoon season in July. The water becomes too murky for good sightings. You want clear water for the anemones.

I prefer diving in January or February. The sea is calm then. The visibility often hits the 30 m mark during these months.

Honest negatives

The crowds can be heavy. Many boats arrive at the same time. This makes the pinnacle feel crowded.

Visibility is not always stable. It can drop to 10 m quickly. This happens if the wind picks up from the south.

You might also encounter strong surge. The surge can push you into the reef. Watch your fins carefully near the anemone clusters.

Planning your dive

Check your nitrogen levels first. Since the depth hits 28 m, you have limited bottom time. Use a dive computer to track your ascent.

If you are new to currents, practice at a shallower site first. Do not attempt Hin Jom without recent experience in moderate flow. Check out our guide to /dive-sites/shark-point/ for easier training sites.
