Koh Phangan: where to dive from a Full-Moon island

Koh Phangan is not just for Full Moon parties. Many divers overlook this island because they focus solely on Koh Tao. I spent two weeks here in February 2018 to test the local boat schedules. I found that the dive sites are nearly identical to those in Tao. You will visit the same massive granite formations and nutrient-rich currents.

Phangan offers a different pace. It is quieter. While Tao feels like a crowded classroom, Phangan feels like a retreat. This makes it better for divers who want a training-course-vacation combo. You can finish an Advanced Open Water course without the constant noise of massive crowds.

Accommodation is often more varied here. You can find high-end villas or quiet bungalows. This is a big advantage if you stay for 14 days. Many people prefer the serenity of the northern beaches.

When to Dive

Timing determines your visibility. The best months are March, April, May, June, July, August, and September. During these months, water temperatures stay between 27°C and 30°C. Visibility usually ranges from 10m to 25m depending on the wind.

Avoid the monsoon season. October, November, and December bring heavy rains and rougher seas. I remember a trip in late November 2019 where the swell made boat transfers difficult. The water becomes murky during these months because of runoff from the island.

Plan your trips carefully. If you want clear water, aim for May. This month often provides the best balance of calm seas and high visibility.

Comparing Phangan and Tao

Divers often ask about the differences between these two islands. The main difference is the density of dive schools. Koh Tao has dozens of shops on every corner. Phangan has far fewer options. This means Phangan boats are often less crowded.

Boat schedules differ significantly too. In Koh Tao, boats leave almost every hour. On Phangan, you might wait longer for a specific departure. You must plan your mornings around the boat times.

Costs vary by lifestyle. Tao is cheaper for budget backpackers. Phangan can be more expensive if you stay in luxury resorts. However, you save money on peace of mind.

Nightlife is another factor. If you want to party every night, go to Tao or stay near Haad Rin. If you want to sleep after a deep dive, choose Phangan. The island offers a much better balance for serious divers.

Essential Koh Phangan Dive Sites

Most boats from Phangan head toward the same famous spots as Tao. You will see incredible marine life at /dive-sites/sail-rock/. This site is a massive underwater mountain. It attracts large schools of trevally and barracuda.

Another must-visit is /dive-sites/chumphon-pinnacle/. This is a deep pinnacle structure. It is often subject to strong currents. These currents bring in nutrients and larger pelagic fish.

Accommodation prices vary widely. A basic bungalow might cost 600 THB per night. A luxury villa can exceed 5,000 THB per night. Always check if your accommodation includes breakfast.

Food is affordable on the island. A local meal costs about 80 to 150 THB. Most dive shops provide a buffet lunch on the boat. This helps keep your daily spending predictable.

Logistics and Getting There

Reaching Koh Phangan requires a few steps. Most travelers fly into Surat Thani (URT) or Samui (USM). Samui is much closer but significantly more expensive. From Samui, you can take a direct ferry to Phangan.

If you fly to Surat Thani, you must take a bus first. The bus ride takes about 2 to 3 hours. Then, you catch a ferry from Donsak pier. This route is cheaper but takes much longer.

Total travel time from Bangkok is roughly 6 to 8 hours. Use the Lomprayah ferry service for the most reliable schedules. They run multiple times every day.

Once on the island, rent a scooter for mobility. Most roads are paved and easy to navigate. However, be careful on the steep hills during rain. Always wear a helmet.

Safety and Marine Environment

Safety is a priority for every diver. Always check your air consumption frequently. The currents at Chumphon Pinnacle can be deceptive. They might pull you away from your group quickly.

Marine debris is an issue in the Gulf. You may see plastic near the reef during low visibility. This is a sad reality for many Southeast Asian dive sites. Please do not touch any coral or marine life.

Nitrox is highly recommended for this region. Most sites have significant depth variations. Using Nitrox helps manage your nitrogen load safely. It makes your dives much more enjoyable.

Always inform your dive guide of any medical conditions. They need to know before you enter the water. A good shop will always perform a safety briefing.

Honest Negatives

Phangan is not perfect. The monsoon season can ruin your plans. Heavy rain makes diving difficult and dangerous. If you visit in November, expect cancellations.

Crowds are still an issue during Full Moon periods. The island becomes very loud and busy. If you want peace, avoid the week of the full moon. Stay on the north side of the island instead.

Some dive sites suffer from siltation. This happens when boats anchor too close to the reef. Look for shops that use permanent mooring buoys. This protects the delicate ecosystem.

If you find the current too strong, practice your buoyancy at Crystal Bay before heading to Sail Rock.
