The Three Pinnacles

Shark Point consists of three distinct rocky pinnacles. These structures rise from the seabed east of Phuket. I first visited this site in 2012. It remains a staple for local boat operators. The topography creates several small overhangs and crevices.

Divers often find themselves hovering near these rocks. Most dives focus on the edges of the pinnacles. You will see plenty of schooling fish here. Small groups of barracuda frequently patrol the upper depths.

What you’ll see

The site gets its name from specific residents. Leopard sharks often rest on the sandy bottom. I saw three of them near a ledge in February 2019. They stay very still during the day. You must look closely to find them.

Other life is common here too. You can expect to see turtle sightings on most trips. Reef-sharks move through the mid-water columns frequently. The visibility usually ranges from 10m to 25m depending on the season.

Schooling fish provide constant movement around the rocks. You might see large schools of fusiliers or jacks. These fish react to light changes throughout the day. It is a busy ecosystem.

Conditions and skill

The depth at Shark Point is 5-24 m. This range makes it suitable for Open Water divers. You do not need advanced certifications for this site. However, you must have good buoyancy control.

The currents are generally mild here. You will not face heavy surge most days. This makes it a safe spot for training. Some divers might feel a slight drift near the pinnacles.

Always watch your depth gauge. The drop-offs can happen quickly after the reef edge. Keep an eye on your air consumption too. Swimming against even mild currents uses more gas.

Logistics from Phuket

Most divers depart from Chalong Pier. Boat trips usually take 45 to 60 minutes. You can find many operators in Rawai or Chalong. Prices for a two-tank boat trip are roughly 1,800 THB per person.

Many boats leave at 08:30 AM sharp. You should arrive at the pier by 08:00 AM. This ensures you have time for gear checks. Most trips include lunch on the boat.

Check your operator’s schedule carefully. Some smaller boats only visit one or two sites. Larger vessels might include nearby spots in their itinerary. It is worth asking about the specific route before paying.

When to go

The best months are November to April. This period offers the most stable weather conditions. Visibility stays at its peak during these months. I prefer diving in February for the clearest water.

During the monsoon season, visibility drops significantly. You might see less than 10m of water in June. The waves can also make boat rides uncomfortable. Most shops reduce their schedules during this time.

Plan your trip for the dry season. This maximizes your chances of seeing the leopard sharks. They are more active when the water is calm. Good luck with your sightings.

Honest negatives

Shark Point can get very crowded. You might share a pinnacle with 12 other divers. This makes it hard to find quiet spots. It is not a remote experience.

The marine life is not always guaranteed. Some days the sharks stay hidden in the sand. You might only see basic reef fish. Do not expect a massive predator encounter every time.

Water temperature varies between 28°C and 30°C. This is quite warm for many divers. You may feel hot during the surface intervals. Bring plenty of fresh water for the boat ride back.

If you want more solitude, head to /destinations/phuket/ for more remote options. If you are new to reefs, practice at a shallow site before visiting Shark Point.
