The history of the wreck

This ferry sank in 1997. It is an 85m vessel. I first visited this site in 2005 when the structure was much cleaner. Now, the metal shows heavy oxidation from years in the Andaman Sea.

The wreck sits near Phuket. It provides a massive artificial reef for local species. You can see the main deck at 18-22m depth. The hull descends until it hits sand at 30m.

What you’ll see

Life clings to the steel. You will find lionfish hiding in the crevices. I often spot barracuda circling the upper railings during my morning dives.

Reef-shark sightings are common here. They move through the open water around the structure. The colonization is quite dense since the wreck has been down for over 25 years. You might see schools of small fish moving through the rusted holes. This site offers a different look than the coral gardens at /destinations/phuket/.

Conditions and skill

This is an advanced site. You need good buoyancy control. The depth reaches 30m on the lower sections.

Carry a reel and an SMB. Currents are usually mild. However, visibility can drop to 8m if the weather changes suddenly. You must be comfortable at 25m depths because of the nitrogen loading. If you lack experience, practice in shallower waters first.

Logistics from Phuket

Most boats leave from Chalong Pier. The trip takes about 45-60 minutes. Most operators charge between 2,500 THB and 3,500 THB for a day trip. This price usually includes lunch and two dives.

You should check your gear carefully. Saltwater eats through seals quickly. I always bring my own spare mask. Many divers prefer taking a speedboat to save time. Speedboats allow you to reach the site faster than larger dive boats.

When to go

Visibility is best from November to April. The water stays warm during these months. I prefer diving in February because the sea is often flat.

Avoid the monsoon season. Heavy rain reduces visibility to 8m or less. You can check local weather reports before booking your boat. Most shops in Phuket operate year-round. Still, the best sightings happen in the dry season.

Honest negatives

It is a crowded site. You will see other boats nearby. Sometimes, the silt on the bottom makes visibility poor after a diver kicks it up.

You cannot enter the wreck easily. Most trips are external-tour only. This is because penetration requires a specific specialty certification. If you want to go inside, you must train elsewhere. The wreck is also quite large. It can feel overwhelming if you are not used to big structures.

Comparison with other sites

King Cruiser is different from /dive-sites/similan-islands/. The Similans offer better visibility but less structure. This wreck provides more hiding spots for predators. I find the reef-shark encounters here more predictable than at shallow reefs.

While the corals are less diverse, the metal attracts specific hunters. It is a heavy, industrial feeling site. Some divers find the rust unappealing. Others love the sense of history it carries.

If you want to see large predators, plan your trip for early morning. Check your air consumption before descending past 25m.
