The Pinnacle Structure

Sail Rock is a massive limestone formation. It rises from 40m up to 5m depth. This structure creates many different micro-habitats. You will find a chimney swim-through at 12-18m. I first dived this site in 2012. The topography changes constantly with the tide.

Large schools of barracuda stay here almost year-round. They hover near the rock edges. This happens because the current brings food to them. You can also see reef-shark patrols along the lower slopes.

What you’ll see

Marine life is abundant here. You might encounter a whale-shark during peak months. These sightings are not guaranteed every trip. However, the chance increases in March or April. I saw a 5m whale-shark near the pinnacle in 2017.

Turtle sightings are also common on the shallower slopes. The visibility usually ranges from 10m to 30m. This depends heavily on recent rain or wind. You should look for barracuda schools near the top. They often form massive, silver walls.

Conditions and skill

This site requires decent buoyancy control. Currents can become quite strong at the summit. While Open Water divers are allowed, they must be comfortable. I recommend at least 20 logged dives before attempting this.

Advanced divers should carry a reef hook. This helps if the current pushes you against the rock. You also need a bright SMB for safety. Most boats will monitor the surface closely. Safety is a priority here.

Logistics from koh-phangan

Most dive boats depart from Koh Phangan piers. The trip takes about 45 to 60 minutes. You will likely join a group boat. Prices for a two-tank boat trip are roughly 1,800 THB. This usually includes lunch and gear rental.

Many operators run out of Thong Sala. Some smaller boats depart from Chaloklum instead. Check your booking details carefully. You might need to travel 15 km across the island.

When to go

The best months are March through September. This period offers the most stable water temperatures. I prefer diving in May for the clarity. The visibility often hits the 30m mark then.

Whale-shark season is very specific. It runs from March to May and again from September to October. If you miss these windows, you might only see smaller fish. Plan your trip around these months for better odds.

Honest negatives

Crowds are a real issue here. You will rarely be alone at the pinnacle. Sometimes 4 or 5 boats arrive at once. This can make the swim-throughs feel cramped. It is not a quiet experience.

Weather risks exist in the Gulf. Heavy rain can drop visibility to 5m quickly. Strong surges also make the shallow sections tricky. You must watch the weather reports daily. Some days the current is simply too much for beginners.
