Ko Ma Pinnacle — Thailand

Site Overview

Ko Ma Pinnacle sits off the northwest coast of Koh Phangan. It is a small underwater formation. Most boats depart from the Chaloklum area to reach it. I first visited this spot in 2016. The coral cover looked healthy then. Today, the site maintains roughly 70% live coral cover. This makes it a reliable garden for reef fish.

It is a shallow site. Depths range from 3 m to 15 m. This depth profile works well for many divers. It is also great for snorkelers. You can see much from the surface.

What you’ll see

Marine life here is predictable. I often see turtles grazing on the reef. They prefer the shallower edges of the pinnacle. You might also spot a ray resting in the sand. The fish populations are steady. Schools of small reef fish move through the coral.

The coral garden is the main feature. It provides plenty of hiding spots for critters. You will find various hard and soft corals here. While it is not a deep wreck site, the topography is interesting. The pinnacle rises from the seabed toward the light. This structure attracts life from the surrounding blue water.

Conditions and skill

This site is for everyone. Open Water divers can enjoy it easily. The depth stays shallow throughout most of the dive. Currents are usually mild here. You do not need a reef hook for this location. However, buoyancy control is still vital for the coral.

Visibility varies by season. I typically see 10-20 m of clarity. If the wind picks up, visibility can drop quickly. Always check the local forecast before you head out. Even with mild currents, stay close to your buddy. This ensures safety in the open water.

Logistics from Koh Phangan

Most divers stay near Chaloklum for this site. It is the main hub for northwest diving. You can find several small operators in this village. Boat trips usually cost between 1,200 THB and 1,800 THB per person. This price often includes lunch and gear rentals.

Travel to Chaloklum takes time. If you stay in Thong Nai Pan, expect a long drive. The road is winding and narrow. I recommend renting a scooter if you are experienced. Otherwise, use a local taxi for the trip. It saves energy for your actual dives.

When to go

The best months are March through September. This window avoids the heaviest monsoon rains. During these months, the water is calmer. You will get the best visibility here. I prefer diving in May or June. The water temperature stays around 28°C.

Rain can change things fast. Heavy storms in October make the sea rough. Most boats stay in the harbor during these times. If you want stable conditions, plan your trip for the dry season. This maximizes your chances of seeing turtles. It also keeps the visibility above 10 m.

Honest negatives

It is not a massive site. Some divers might find it too small. It lacks the huge drop-offs found in /destinations/koh-tao/. If you want deep walls, look elsewhere. The site can also feel crowded. Multiple boats often arrive at the same time. This happens frequently during peak season.

Water temperature is warm. You might feel sweaty in a thick wetsuit. A 3 mm suit is usually enough. Some people find the shallow depth boring. They want more challenging environments. Ko Ma Pinnacle is a simple, beautiful garden. It is not an adrenaline site.

Planning your trip

Check your gear before you go. Ensure your mask fits well for snorkeling. If you are a beginner, practice in /dive-sites/crystal-bay/ first. This helps you manage buoyancy in shallow areas. Always bring a surface marker buoy. Even in mild currents, visibility of your position is key.
