Wing BCD (rear inflate)

Also: wing, back inflate

A wing BCD is a buoyancy device where the air bladder sits on your back rather than around your chest. This design moves the air away from your torso. It is common in technical diving or sidemount configurations because it allows for better horizontal trim. Most wings hold between 20 and 40 liters of air. You will see these used often in wreck diving near sites like Anilao.

Don’t overinflate the bladder during your descent. I once saw a diver struggle with buoyancy because he added too much air at 15 m. This caused his legs to sink toward the bottom. Always check your dump valves before you leave the boat. A reliable wing helps you stay flat in the water.
