Valsalva equalization
The Valsalva maneuver is a way to balance the air pressure in your middle ear. You do this by pinching your nose and blowing gently through it. This technique helps you descend safely.
Divers use this method during the initial stages of a dive. It works well when you go from 0 m down to 5 m or 10 m. Most recreational divers rely on this because it is easy to remember. However, it can be difficult if your sinuses are blocked by a cold.
Do not blow too hard during the process. I saw a student in Koh Tao in 2019 cause a burst eardrum because he forced the air too aggressively. Instead, try small, frequent movements every meter of descent. If you feel pain, stop your descent immediately. Wait until the pressure equalizes before you go deeper.
