Toynbee equalization (swallow)

The Toynbee Maneuver is a method where you pinch your nose and swallow to move air into your middle ear. This technique relies on the pressure in your throat to force air through the Eustachian tubes.

Divers use this method during descent when standard Valsalva attempts fail. It works best at shallow depths between 3 m and 10 m. I used this often in Koh Tao because the rapid descents can catch beginners off guard.

Do not force a swallow if you feel sharp pain. You might damage your eardrum if you push too hard while your nose is pinched shut. Always try gentle methods first. If the pressure persists, stop your descent immediately so that you do not cause injury.
