Snorkel (surface breathing tube)

A snorkel is a simple breathing tube that allows you to stay face-down in the water without lifting your head. You use it while swimming on the surface or waiting for your dive buddy to catch up. Most divers use it during surface intervals or when snorkeling near reefs like those in Koh Tao. It keeps your airway clear while you observe marine life from above.

Check your purge valve frequently. Many beginners forget to clear water out of the tube after a wave hits them, which causes them to inhale salt water. I once saw a diver in Cebu struggle because they used a dry snorkel in heavy surge. Dry snorkels are harder to clear when waves splash into the top. Always choose a simple J-tube if you plan to dive in choppy conditions.
