Seahorse species (pygmy, common)
Also: pygmy seahorse
Seahorses are small fish that swim upright using a tiny fin on their backs. They use their tails to grip coral or seagrass while they rest.
You will find common species in many reef areas across Cebu or Koh Tao. Pygmy seahorses are much smaller and stay hidden on gorgonian corals because their skin matches the host perfectly. I once spent 20 minutes searching a single fan in Anilao to find one tiny specimen.
Always look closely at the coral branches rather than scanning the open water. Many divers miss them because they search for large movements instead of tiny, still shapes. Bring a macro lens if you want clear photos of these animals.
