Scorpionfish (camouflaged venomous)
A Scorpionfish is a predator that looks like a rock or coral. These fish use camouflage to hide from prey and predators alike.
You find them on reef slopes in places like Anilao or Koh Tao. They often sit perfectly still at depths between 5 m and 25 m. Because they blend into the seabed, you might accidentally touch one while looking for macro life. This mistake leads to a venomous sting that causes sudden, extreme pain.
Always keep your hands to yourself during a dive. I saw a diver in Cebu nearly step on one in 2018 because he was distracted by a nudibranch. Check your footing before you move. Watch for odd bumps on the reef.
