RMV — Respiratory Minute Volume

Also: minute volume

RMV is the total amount of gas you inhale and exhale every sixty seconds. It measures your breathing rate in liters per minute. Divers use this number to predict how long a cylinder will last at specific depths. For example, a diver with an RMV of 15 L/min will consume more air at 30 m than at 10 m because the ambient pressure increases. Most recreational divers average between 12 and 20 L/min during calm dives. However, your RMV rises sharply when you swim against a strong current in Komodo. You must monitor your breathing closely to avoid unexpected gas shortages. Do not rely on a low RMV from a relaxed shore dive when planning deep technical decompression stops. Always calculate your consumption based on your highest expected workload.
