Reel and spool (line management)

Also: finger spool

A reel or spool is a tool used to hold and deploy long lines. Divers use these devices to manage guide lines during specific types of dives.

You will see them in wreck diving or cave exploration. Many divers also use a small finger spool for drift dives in places like Komodo. A standard reel often holds 50 m to 100 m of line. It helps you find your way back to the boat or exit.

Never let the line tangle around your regulator or BCD. I saw a diver in Anilao lose his mask because his line snagged his gear. Always check that the line rotates freely before you descend. Keep your spool close to your body so you can control it easily.
