Pinnacle (submerged peak)
A pinnacle is a steep underwater mountain that rises from the seafloor toward the sunlight. These structures often start at depths of 40 m or more before reaching shallow reefs. They create vertical walls where currents hit the rock. This movement brings nutrients to the site. You will see large schools of fish around these peaks because the structure forces water upward.
I saw massive gorgonian fans at a pinnacle in Komodo back in 2018. The currents here are often strong. Always check your air consumption before you descend along the wall. Many divers make the mistake of fighting the surge near the top. This uses too much energy. Stay close to the reef structure if the current pushes you away from the peak.
