Octopus species seen diving

An octopus is a soft-bodied mollusk with eight arms used for movement and hunting. These animals are common in Southeast Asian reefs like Anilao or Koh Tao. You might see them hiding in crevices at depths of 10 m to 30 m. They use camouflage to vanish against coral or sand.

Watch your buoyancy. Many divers accidentally kick the substrate while they search for a hidden specimen. This can damage the reef or scare the animal away before you get a good look. Look for subtle changes in skin texture rather than just color shifts. I once spent 15 minutes tracking a Mimic Octopus in 2018 because its movement was so distinct from the surrounding sand. Always maintain a steady position so that you do not stir up silt and ruin your visibility.
