Mola mola — Ocean sunfish

Also: ocean sunfish

The Mola mola is a giant, flat-bodied fish that looks like a floating head. These animals can weigh over 2,000 kg in some cases. You often see them in the waters of Komodo or near the Maldives. They usually hover near the surface to sunbathe after deep dives.

Visibility matters here. I saw a 250 kg specimen at 15 m depth in Komodo back in February 2018. Most sightings happen during the transition between seasons when currents shift.

Do not chase them. They move slowly through the water column. If you swim too fast, they will disappear into the blue before you can get a photo. Keep your buoyancy steady so you do not scare them away from the surface.
