Neoprene hood (thermal protection)

Also: dive hood

A neoprene hood is a tight-fitting cap made of synthetic rubber. It covers your head and ears to stop heat from escaping. Most divers use these when water temperatures drop below 26°C. I used a 3 mm hood during my 2018 trip to Anilao because the current felt cold. A thicker 5 mm version works better for deeper dives in Komodo.

It affects your comfort levels significantly. You will feel much warmer if the seal is tight against your face. Many beginners buy a hood that is too large. This mistake allows cold water to flush inside during every descent. Always check the fit before you buy gear. A good hood should feel snug but not cause a headache. Buy one size smaller if you plan to wear it under a mask.
