Standard diving hand signals

Hand signals are visual tools used to communicate when you cannot speak underwater. Divers use these gestures to share vital information like depth, air levels, or direction. You will use them in every environment from the calm reefs of Koh Tao to the heavy currents in Komodo. Most instructors teach basic signs during your Open Water course so that you can signal a buddy immediately.

Communication is vital for safety. I once saw a diver in Cebu try to point at a turtle while forgetting to signal his air level. This mistake caused unnecessary panic because his buddy thought he was out of gas. Always prioritize the “OK” sign and the “low air” signal before you look at marine life. A clear, firm gesture works better than a small, shaky movement when visibility drops below 5 m.
