Hammerhead shark species
Hammerhead sharks are a group of sharks with wide, flattened heads. These distinctive shapes help them find prey in the sand.
You often see Scalloped Hammerheads in Komodo or Cocos Island. They typically travel in large schools because the nutrient-rich currents attract smaller fish. While some species stay near reefs, larger ones move through open water at depths of 25 m to 50 m. I saw a group of 40 individuals near Komodo in June 2022.
Watch your buoyancy. If you kick up too much silt during a descent, you might scare them away before they notice you. Keep your eyes on the blue horizon rather than looking straight down at the seabed.
