Frogfish (Antennariidae)
A frogfish is a slow-moving fish that looks like a sponge or coral. These creatures use a modified fin called an illicium to hunt.
You will find them near Anilao or Komodo. They often sit perfectly still on reef slopes at depths of 12 m to 25 m. Most species rely on camouflage to stay hidden from both predators and prey.
Look closely at the substrate. Many divers swim right past them because the fish blends into the reef structure. Always scan the sponges near your buddy. If you see a strange bump that seems to twitch, it is likely a frogfish waiting for a snack.
