Flying after diving (DAN guidelines)
Also: flight interval, altitude after diving
The flying after diving rule prevents nitrogen bubbles from forming in your blood during flight. You must wait a specific amount of time after your last dive because air pressure drops significantly in a plane. Most divers follow DAN guidelines which suggest 18 hours for a single dive. You need 24 hours if you do multiple dives per day. Many people ignore this rule because they want to save money on flights. This mistake is dangerous. If you fly too soon, you risk severe decompression sickness even if you felt fine on land. Always check your flight schedule before you book a trip to Koh Tao or Cebu. A 24-hour buffer is safer than 18 hours.
