Paddle fins (stiff blade)
Also: jet fins, rocket fins
Paddle fins are heavy-duty fins with a rigid blade design. They work by pushing large volumes of water backward during each kick. You will need these when diving sites like Komodo or Tubbataha have strong currents that require constant movement. While they provide massive thrust, they also require significant leg strength to use effectively. Many divers struggle because they try to use these stiff blades in calm, shallow water where they feel heavy. This mistake leads to fast fatigue during a 45 minute dive. I always pack my Scubapro Jet Fins for any trip involving high surge or heavy drift. They are not for beginners. Use them only when the current demands high power output.
