EFR — Emergency First Response (CPR/AED)
Also: CPR for divers
The EFR course teaches you how to perform CPR and use an automated external defibrillator (AED). It is a practical training program. Most dive centers in Koh Tao or Cebu require this certification before you start advanced courses like Rescue Diver. You will learn how to manage airway obstructions and bleeding during a real emergency. This training affects your ability to act fast when a buddy stops breathing.
Don’t just memorize the steps for the exam. I saw a student in Anilao in 2019 struggle because he focused on the theory instead of the physical pressure needed for chest compressions. Practice the actual rhythm on a manikin until it feels natural. A common mistake is being too gentle with the chest. You need to push hard and fast to make it work.
