Divemaster (first professional level)
Also: DM
A Divemaster is a professional diver who leads recreational groups. This role is the first step into the industry. You work as a guide or assistant instructor on boats in places like Koh Tao or Komodo. Most agencies require 40 to 60 logged dives before you start the course. You will manage gear, assist with surface skills, and watch your divers closely.
Don’t just watch the fish. A common mistake is focusing too much on marine life while neglecting the group’s air consumption or depth limits. I saw a DM in Cebu lose track of a student because he was busy photographing a turtle. Always keep your eyes on the divers first. Safety comes before any photo opportunity.
