Dive computer (depth, time, NDL)

Also: dive watch

A dive computer is a digital device that monitors your dive profile by calculating how much nitrogen enters your body while you are underwater. You wear it on your wrist like a watch.

How it works in practice

Most models show your current depth in meters and your remaining No Decompression Limit (NDL). The device uses a pressure sensor to track your descent rate. It calculates nitrogen absorption because the internal algorithm tracks how long you stay at specific pressures. I used a Suunto D4 in Anilao back in 2016 to monitor my profiles.

The screen displays many numbers. You must watch your depth, time, and NDL constantly. A computer might show 18 m of depth while your NDL drops from 50 minutes to 12 minutes in a single descent.

Accuracy is vital.

Why it matters for safety

Safety depends on nitrogen management. This is because you cannot feel nitrogen buildup in your bloodstream. I once saw a diver in Koh Tao ignore his NDL because he felt fine. This was a mistake since the computer tracks nitrogen buildup that you cannot feel.

A broken device is dangerous. It provides zero data when you need it most. You should always carry a backup device or at least a reliable depth gauge.

Check your settings.

Common mistakes to avoid

Many divers ignore their air pressure. You must check your air pressure alongside your NDL readings during every dive. I have seen divers reach their NDL limit while they still had 120 bar in their tanks. This is risky because you might run out of air before you can complete a safe ascent.

Don’t trust one number. Always look at both the NDL and your remaining gas.

Watch your pressure.

Connection to decompression theory

The computer manages your ascent profile. It uses mathematical models to prevent Decompression Sickness (DCS). If you exceed your NDL, the device will trigger a mandatory decompression stop. I saw a diver in Komodo hit a “deco” alert after a deep dive at 32 m. He had to stay at 5 m for several minutes to offgas safely.

The NDL is a limit. It is not a suggestion for your dive plan.

Always carry a backup computer or a dive watch with depth capabilities.
