Decompression stop (mandatory)

Also: deco stop

A decompression stop is a required pause during your ascent. You stay at a certain depth for a set time because your body needs to off-gas nitrogen safely.

This happens when you exceed no-decompression limits on your dive computer. While a recreational diver in Koh Tao might avoid these, technical divers in Komodo often perform them at 6 m or 3 m. These stops can last from 1 minute to over 30 minutes depending on your depth profile and nitrogen load.

Never skip a stop to reach the boat faster. I once saw a diver rush a 3 m stop because of heavy surge in Cebu, which led to severe bends. Always monitor your computer closely during these pauses. If you feel pain, ascend slowly and seek immediate medical help.
