Cuttlefish (Sepiidae)
A cuttlefish is a soft-bodied sea creature with an internal shell. These animals belong to the Sepiidae family. You often see them in Anilao or around the reefs of Koh Tao because they hide near the seabed. They change skin patterns instantly to match sand or coral. This camouflage helps them ambush small crabs or shrimp. I once watched a giant cuttlefish stay invisible for 12 minutes while sitting on a rock. Most species live at depths between 10 m and 60 m. Do not hover too close to their mantle. They are sensitive to sudden movements and will jet away into the blue if you scare them. If you want a good photo, wait for them to settle first.
