CMAS — Confédération Mondiale des Activités Subaquatiques

Also: world underwater federation

The CMAS (Confédération Mondiale des Activités Subaquatiques) is an international federation for underwater activities. It provides a standardized system for diver training and skill assessment. Many European clubs use these certifications because they follow a strict, progressive structure from 1-star to 4-star levels. You will see CMAS cards in countries like France or Italy. Some dive centers in Koh Tao also offer these courses.

Check the specific agency before you pay for a course. A CMAS certification is widely recognized, but it is not the same as PADI or SSI. I once saw a diver struggle with a CMAS 2-star exam because the skill requirements were more technical than his previous training. Always confirm that your local shop accepts these credentials for boat trips. This prevents issues when you travel to new regions.
