Cavern and Cave Diver progression
This training path moves divers from open water into overhead environments. It is a step-by-step process. You start with basic cavern skills before moving toward full cave certification. This progression affects your gas management and light usage. Most students spend 40 to 60 hours in training for the first stage.
I saw many divers rush this process in Mexico during 2018. They tried complex penetrations without mastering basic buoyancy first. Never skip the cavern phase because you need total control. A common mistake is carrying too much gear before you master your trim. Always keep your light source redundant. Most agencies like IANTD or TDI require strict adherence to these levels.
