Bommie (coral outcrop)

Also: bombora

A bommie is a large coral structure that rises from the flat ocean floor. Divers often find these outcrops in areas like Anilao or Komodo. They act as vertical islands for fish because the hard structure provides shelter from strong currents. Most bommies reach depths between 10 m and 30 m. You will see many species congregate around them.

Watch your buoyancy closely. Many divers accidentally hit the coral when they try to hover near a ledge. I saw a student in Cebu smash a gorgonian fan because he forgot to check his depth. Keep your fins up. This prevents you from kicking the delicate growth on the sides of the structure.
