Back kick (reverse finning)

The back kick is a way to move backward through the water. You do this by pushing your fins in a reverse motion. It helps you stay in one place or retreat from a reef.

Divers use this technique during buoyancy checks or when approaching delicate coral. In places like Anilao, you need this skill to avoid hitting macro subjects. I used it often in 2018 to back away from stinging hydroids. It works best at depths between 5 m and 20 m where precision matters most.

Avoid using your hands to push off anything. Most beginners kick too hard and lose all control. Instead, focus on small, rhythmic movements with your ankles. This keeps your bubbles steady and your silt low.
