The history of the hull
The USS Liberty has a strange history. It was torpedoed in 1942 during the war. Later, the 1963 Agung eruption caused the ship to slide into the sea. This event moved the vessel from land to its current position.
It sits only 30 m offshore. The steel hull remains largely intact. I first saw it in 2012 near Tulamben. The structure is massive.
What you’ll see
You will find plenty of life here. Barracuda often hover near the upper sections. I saw a large school of them in July 2018. They move in tight groups.
Turtles use the wreck for shelter. You can also spot frogfish hiding in the coral. These creatures stay very still. The visibility usually ranges between 15 m and 25 m.
Night dives are excellent. The wreck changes at night. Small predators come out to hunt. It is a different world.
Conditions and skill
This is a shore dive. You swim out from the beach. Most divers start at 5 m depth. The deeper parts reach 30 m. It is easy for beginners.
The currents are usually mild. You do not need a reef hook here. However, you should carry a buoy. Safety is always a priority.
Open Water divers can enjoy this site. You only need basic buoyancy control. If the surge is high, stay cautious. The sand can get messy.
Logistics from Bali
Most divers stay in Tulamben. You can drive 2.5 h from Sanur. The road is winding. Many people use private cars. It is quite cheap.
Local dive shops offer daily trips. Expect to pay $35 USD for a single tank. This price often includes gear rental. Check the local rates first.
You can find many hotels nearby. Some are very basic. Others have pools and AC. Tulamben is quiet. It is not a party town.
When to go
The best months are April through November. This period offers the most stable weather. You want clear water. Dry season is better.
Avoid the heavy monsoon rains. The visibility drops during these times. I prefer diving in June. The water is calm then. You get 20 m visibility easily.
Temperature stays around 27°C. It is warm year-round. You do not need a thick suit. A 3 mm wetsuit works well. Pack light clothes.
Honest negatives
The site can get very crowded. Many boats arrive at 9:00 AM. You might share the wreck with 20 people. This ruins the peace. It feels busy.
The entry can be tricky. Walking through the surf is hard. Waves can knock you over. Watch your fins carefully. Sand gets everywhere.
Some parts of the wreck are sharp. Do not touch the steel. Rust can cut your skin. Always maintain good buoyancy. Stay away from the edges.
Planning your visit
Check your buoyancy before you go. The wreck has many small holes. You do not want to hit them. Practice in a pool first. It saves time.
Bring a good torch. Even in daylight, shadows exist. The interior of the hull is dark. A light helps you see detail. It also helps find frogfish.
If you are a beginner, practice at a calm reef first. Try diving at Amed before heading to the Liberty wreck. This builds your confidence.
