Site Overview
Siaba Besar sits within the Komodo National Park. It offers a sheltered environment compared to the high-current channels nearby. I first visited this site in 2016 while working on a liveaboard. The topography stays relatively shallow. Depths usually range between 5 m and 18 m.
It is a calm spot. Most boats use this area for training dives because the water remains predictable. You will find plenty of macro life here too.
What you’ll see
This site is famous for its turtle population. I observed a turtle sighting rate of 50% during my last three trips here. They often rest on the reef edges. You might also spot reef-shark species patrolling the sandy patches.
Visibility varies frequently. Most days provide 10 m to 25 m of clear water. The reef structure supports many small organisms. It is a great place for macro photography. Look closely at the coral heads for nudibranchs.
Conditions and skill
This site is suitable for Open Water divers. The current is mild. You do not need a reef hook here. However, you should still maintain good buoyancy. Shallow depths mean light rays reach the bottom easily.
Beginners often struggle with depth control. This site helps them practice because the environment is stable. If you are doing a specialty course, this is a logical choice. Always monitor your air consumption in shallow water. You will breathe faster near the surface.
Logistics from Komodo
Most divers depart from Labuan Bajo. You can join a liveaboard or take a day boat. A typical day trip costs between 80 USD and 150 USD. This price usually includes lunch and park fees.
Travel time varies by boat type. Fast boats reach the site in 2 to 3 hours. Smaller wooden boats take longer. Many operators depart from the main harbor around 07:00 AM. Check your schedule carefully.
When to go
The best months are March through October. I prefer diving in April or May. The water is warm during these months. You can expect temperatures around 27°C to 29°C.
Rainy seasons can affect visibility. Avoid the peak monsoon if you want clear views. Most divers arrive in July and August. These months bring the most consistent weather patterns. Plan your trip for the dry season.
Honest negatives
Siaba Besar is not for adrenaline seekers. It lacks the massive currents found at sites like Castle Rock. Some divers find it too quiet. The shallow depth can feel repetitive after several dives.
Crowds are a real factor. Because it is a training hub, you might share the water with students. This can disrupt the peace. You may see many bubbles from groups practicing skills. It is rarely a solitary experience.
If you want big fish, go elsewhere. This site focuses on turtles and macro life. It does not offer the massive manta ray encounters seen at /destinations/komodo/ sites like Manta Point. Use this site to build confidence before hitting the heavy channels. If you feel ready for more, check our guide to /dive-sites/shotgun-reef/ next.
