Site Overview
Crystal Rock is a massive underwater pinnacle. It sits near the famous Castle Rock. The structure rises from the seabed. Most divers find it at depths between 5 m and 25 m. I first visited this site in May 2016. The coral cover was already quite high then. Today, the reef remains very healthy. It provides a hard surface for many species.
This site is a pillar of the region. It sits close to other major sites in /destinations/komodo/. You will see a lot of life here.
What you’ll see
Expect plenty of movement here. Whitetip and blacktip sharks are resident species. I often see them resting on the sandy patches. You might also spot a reef-shark cruising the edges. Rays frequently glide over the deeper sections. Turtles use the current to save energy while feeding.
Coral cover is excellent at this location. Large hard corals grow across the rock face. The visibility stays between 20 m and 30 m. This range allows for great spotting of smaller creatures. You should watch the crevices for macro life too. Many small fish live within the coral branches.
Conditions and skill
This is an advanced dive site. You need good buoyancy skills. The current is moderate but can change quickly. I recommend carrying a reef hook for stability. It helps you stay still without touching the coral.
Don’t dive this without a surface marker buoy (SMB). The currents can pull you away from the boat. You must be comfortable with drift diving. If you lack experience, practice at /dive-sites/crystal-bay/ first. Most boats in Komodo require 30+ logged dives for this area. Safety is the priority here.
Logistics from Komodo
Most divers stay in Labuan Bajo. You will take a boat from the harbor. The trip to Crystal Rock takes about 45 minutes. Many liveaboard boats include this site in their itineraries. Day trips are also available for local divers.
Prices vary by operator. A standard day trip costs around $85 USD. This usually includes two dives and lunch. Check your boat’s fuel policy before you pay. Some smaller operators charge extra for gear rental. I suggest renting locally to save money on flights.
When to go
The best months are March through October. The water is warmest during these months. I prefer diving in April or May. The visibility is often at its peak then. You will see 25 m of clarity easily.
Avoid the peak monsoon season if possible. Heavy rain can reduce visibility to under 10 m. This makes spotting sharks much harder. Most divers arrive between June and August. These months offer very stable weather conditions. However, the crowds increase during this period.
Honest negatives
It is not always calm. The current can become quite strong. This makes photography difficult for many people. You might struggle to stay in one spot.
Crowds are a real issue here. Many boats arrive at the same time. You might share the pinnacle with 12 other divers. This reduces the sense of isolation. Some divers find the noise from boats distracting. It can also spook the larger sharks. If you hate crowds, go early in the morning. Most boats start their first dive at 08:00 AM.
Planning your trip
Check your gear before you leave. Ensure your computer is fully charged. A reliable dive computer is vital here. You need to track your ascent carefully. The depth changes quickly around the rock edges.
Pack a high-quality torch for the crevices. Even in 30 m visibility, shadows exist. These shadows hide the best reef-shark sightings. If you have never dived current, start at Crystal Bay before Manta Point.
Frequently asked questions
Is Crystal Rock suitable for beginners?
No. The moderate currents and depth range require advanced certification and strong buoyancy control.
What gear should I bring?
A reef hook is useful for staying stable near the pinnacle during moderate currents.
