The Shotgun Experience
Shotgun is fast. This site is located within /destinations/komodo/ and lives up to its name. You ride the current like a projectile because the water moves through the channel with massive force. I first dived this spot in 2014 while working on a liveaboard near Labuan Bajo.
The speed is intense. While you drift, you must manage your buoyancy to avoid hitting the reef. Most divers use a reef hook here so that they can rest during the high-speed transit.
What you’ll see
Expect big animals. The site offers frequent sightings of reef-shark and large schools of barracuda. I saw a group of ten rays passing through the channel during a dive in July 2018.
The visibility is good. You can usually expect 15-25m of clear water depending on the tide cycle. This allows you to see the predators circling in the blue before they arrive at the reef edge.
Large fish dominate. You will likely encounter massive schools of fish that move in unison with the current. It is a high-energy environment for marine life.
Conditions and skill
This is advanced territory. You need at least 50 logged dives before attempting this site safely. The depth ranges from 5 m to 35 m throughout the channel sections.
Strong currents are guaranteed. You must carry a high-visibility SMB (Surface Marker Buoy) because the boat may struggle to find you in heavy chop. If you cannot control your position in a 3-knot flow, do not attempt this dive.
Gear is vital. Always bring a sturdy reef hook and a reliable dive computer. Managing your air consumption is harder here since you are constantly fighting or riding the water movement.
Logistics from Komodo
Most trips start in Labuan Bajo. You will typically board a liveaboard or a fast boat for day trips. A standard day trip from the hub costs roughly 85 USD per person.
The distance varies. Depending on your boat, you might travel 15 km or 30 km from the main harbor to reach the Cauldron area. Most operators depart around 07:00 AM to catch the morning tides.
Plan your budget. Remember that park entrance fees for Komodo National Park are separate from your dive costs. These fees changed in 2023 and can add 25 USD to your daily total.
When to go
The best months are March through October. I prefer diving in May because the water is often calmer during the transition periods. The visibility stays consistent during these eight months.
Avoid the peak monsoon. Heavy rain can drop visibility below 10 m and make the surface conditions dangerous for small boats. Check local weather reports before booking your specific dates.
Honest negatives
The crowds are real. During the peak season in August, you might share the current with three other dive boats. This makes it hard to find a quiet spot on the reef.
It is physically exhausting. You spend much of the dive working to stay stable or holding onto the substrate. If you prefer easy, relaxing dives, this site will frustrate you.
Temperature fluctuates. The water stays around 27-29°C, but the current can make it feel much colder. Bring a 3 mm wetsuit to stay comfortable during longer sessions.
If you have never dived heavy current, practice at Crystal Bay in Thailand before attempting Shotgun.
